The graphic world of the Foggernauts
2012-06-07 15:10
We found a book of abandoned doodles covered with crustaceans on an isolated stretch of beach… Our first thought was to serve you up a recipe for Mumussels and Fries, but after giving it some more consideration, we thought you’d rather see some development sketches of Oktapodas (aka Osamodas)’s new disciples.

Lorko, the artistic director of DOFUS, shares his experience of bringing the Foggernauts to life in the game.

“Even before the Sufokians were revealed in the WAKFU animated series, Tot (one of the three Ankama founders) wanted this class to be integrated within the game of DOFUS and WAKFU. My team concentrated on “the past” and what the Foggers would look like in the age of DOFUS. Everything we were working on would pre-date the comics and the animated series.

To feed our artistic research, we relied on three simple principles:

The Foggernaut technology seen in the age of DOFUS is far less advanced than that seen in other Krosmoz projects. So out with the sleek and sophisticated submaries! The DOFUS Foggers are very ingenious, but they are limited to rudimentary instruments: large wooden barrels bound with iron and equipped with pedals to create the necessary thrust to explore underwater depths. (Yes, the energy of Stasalis was not yet explored in the age of DOFUS…)

The background of the historic waterfront town of Sufokia will expand dramatically. The architecture and operation of the underwater Sufokia buildings will really surprise you. Some of these submerged areas will be revealed with the release of the Fogger class, but this is only the tip of the iceberg… the rest will come later. ;)

We wanted a class that would be a combination of deep-sea divers and fishermen with puffy pants, heavy leaden boots, and a metal clamp collar that could be used to attach a diver’s helmet. On the design side, we don’t have any character with a triangular outline, except for Enutrofs!

The basics were all there, all we had to do them was start sketching!"

It's decided. My Osa's gonna marry a Fogger (if they play the way I think they do).

She was supposed to go to a Feca, but they got ugly. >XD

(psst: the theme is called "steampunk")

or maybe "magipunk" or something would be more accurate?

It looks like very little effort went into the physical design of this class. I mean, it's just a guy with goggles. At least Masq's follow a theme, and Pandawa are Jedi Panda. It just feels like trying to crank out new things to keep people interested, I hope I'm wrong, but those sketches don't really affirm any belief in the class.

Um, the Pandawas are based on various drunken styles of Chinese kung-fu, not on Jedis. Unless, of course, you're playing a totally different Pandawa class that looks like a guy in a brown robe who uses laser swords and telekinesis.

It's not yet a complete technologically based class compared to the Wakfu age. If their technology is not powered by stasili yet, then maybe they really are magitech powered (technology powered by magic).
