Update on the Future of DOFUS Retro

By [Ankama]DOFUS - ADMIN - October 11, 2019, 17:00:00

Two weeks after the launch of DOFUS Retro, it's time to take a look in the rear-view mirror and tell you about the origin of the project, but it's also the chance to get out our crystal ball and talk to you about the future!

We can't start this post without saying a big THANK YOU! You made this launch a success and we're infinitely grateful to you. This success is of great importance to us, as it goes beyond the mere feeling of satisfaction – you'll see this in the coming paragraphs – and we'd like to tell you that your passion has a lasting effect on the strategy and investment we'll be undertaking.

Some people will remember that when the 1.29 servers opened to the French community, Ankama's position was that these servers may well exist, but we weren't going to do any development on them. This was a valid position, but some of us weren't entirely satisfied.

That's why, in early 2019, we gave the 1.29 community a survey to assess which improvements would be welcome without changing the gaming experience. The idea was to improve in-game comfort without changing the authenticity of the experience or adding mechanics that would betray the spirit of the game.

After this survey, we integrated the improvements that met two criteria: approval of the community and ease of development. This is the version that we named DOFUS Retro.

Thanks to your passion and enthusiasm, we were able to demonstrate that this version had an audience and that you were ready to throw yourselves into this "old-school" game mode. More challenges and farming, not to mention slower progress? That wouldn't scare you! That's what encouraged us to keep putting a lot into this version – for at least the next few months.

Therefore, it's with great pleasure that we have two announcements that will – we hope – make you just as happy as us:

  • We're creating a working group that will continue to improve your gaming experience in the coming months, with the goal of improving things without betraying the authenticity of the game. There will be bug fixes, but features aimed at increasing comfort will also be implemented.

  • We're also talking with the creator of DOFUS Remastered, a project that aims to improve the visual aspect of the game while keeping its special charm, so as to integrate all or part of what it offers.

We would like to take this opportunity to clarify our position on third-party applications that modify the behavior or appearance of DOFUS. For your own protection, we do not support these initiatives. Using this type of application exposes you to security flaws (intentional or accidental) that make it possible to use your personal data (documents, contact details, friend list, social media, bank accounts, etc.) and can also create inequality between players (number of possible actions, action clarity, etc.). For your protection and to keep the game fair, we therefore have a policy of zero tolerance toward modifying the client or the behavior of the game.

However, we recognize the value of the project offered by DOFUS Remastered and so we wish to offer you these improvements in a legitimate and secure way by working with its creator.

You'll have to be a little patient to appreciate how DOFUS Retro is evolving, but we were eager to give you this good news, which was made possible by your enthusiasm! Once again, a big thank you, and… Happy 15th anniversary, DOFUS!

This is great! An HD upgrade of the 1.29 graphics like the Remastered projects offers is very welcome!
I'm also very glad to hear you guys are gonna give Retro some much needed QoL improvements and bug fixes without working on class balancing or other things that could break the Retro experience.

Thank you! And thank you for getting in touch with community-driven projects like Remastered instead of shutting them down without any thoughts that they might offer something valuable!

Many many many many thanks for Dofus Retro.
I by myself enjoy this Version of Dofus very much and was able to get some people back to Dofus and even bring 3-4 new player within the game.

As I mentioned here (https://www.dofus.com/en/forum/8-suggestion-box/335731-3-suggestions-1-29-servers) it would be important to look over to players who can't speak French, but who like Dofus Retro very much. Because of this you should add either langguage-channels (like there are in dofus 2.x) or at least english servers (including free character-transfer to them).
Second, the queue-issue MUST be fixed as soon as possible. Otherwise, the players will sooner or later leave the game. Waiting for 1/2 or even 1h only to get into the game is way to long these days.

This is what we need. I’m really glad about the creation of dofus retro and upcoming updates etc. But it kind of demotivate to play with people who dont speak the same language.

Im really looking forward for an english community

where are the improvements that were discussed before the launch?

The classification of archi monsters and creatures in the soul market?

the possible characteristics of each object?

When was the nerf kralamar survey done?

the 1.30 client is much slower than the 1.29 client...
not counting the new errors it has
most deplorable

ankama starts playing at 1.30 and is already damaging it.

Please, do only what the players approve and not the crazy things that only work in your head, the latter, apply them in your beloved 2.xxxx and leave 1.30 in peace, please.

The whole point of making Dofus Retro HD is to make it run smoother. Right now it doesn't even run at 30 FPS. It would be nice to have the game smoother rather than choppy like it is now.

I feel like some of the people commenting here don't know what "Dofus Remastered" is and what the graphics improvements mean. Ankama burned us all heavily with the 2.0 graphical improvements.

Here's a trailer where you guys can see what those improvements mean. It's gonna be the same graphics, just sharpened and in higher resolution. Nothing like the 2.0 jump. Calm down.

The thing about remastered is that all Ankama has to do is export all their old assets with less compression. There is no need to vector anything, because all the Dofus art was vectored in the first place. They just seemingly decided to make certain scenery elements into jpegs- probably for both performance, and client size.

I have been tempted to download the remastered pack, but only to replace scenery elements that have obnoxious levels of artifacting. Anything more is totally unnecessary beyond the preferences of the creator.

I'm happy about the prospect of QOL changes being made to Dofus Retro.
It will probably go a long way to ensure I continue logging in when I get my new computer.
As for the remastered graphics....
Don't do it, that's exactly the thing that scared away people when the transition to 2.0 happened.
I don't want to lose any more friends than I already have.

The Remastered graphics aren't the same as the 2.0 jump.
They're taking all the 1.29 graphics and keeping them as they are now, but make them look sharper around the edges. Iops will look 1:1 the same as the Iops from 1.29. So will Gobballs and everything else.
They won't turn Gobballs cute and rework cities and turn Sadidas into weirdos with rosy cheeks.

It's so the graphics won't be blurry. It's turning a 200x200 image into a 600x600 image and making it look better.

I realize that we've all been pretty burned by Ankama by the last time they mentioned "graphical improvements" and 2.0 happened. That's not what's happening this time.

And believe me, this will turn into a #BoycottAnkama real quick if they turn 1.29 into another 2.0.

I cant wait for HD remaster.
I see lots of people here not understanding what "hd remaster" means, is not a design change, is a directly quality improvement. The game looks as it looks 'coz 15 years ago they couldn't release "a just downloadable game" with 10Gb of high res graphics assets. Give Dofus Retro the graphics it deserves, HD in its own original classic "retramazing" feels.

This is not necessarily true. They have been taking artistic liberties with the project, and even just the sharpening of assets will obviously have an effect on how the game looks, as elements that were formerly soft-looking because of their poor quality will suddenly stand out more.

There are already prime examples in the game of how high-quality assets actually look very goofy against the rougher, and more natural-looking ones they're next to. A good example is the staircase and jeweller table that I'm currently looking at in the Bonta magus workshop. If every asset ends up looking like those, I will be pissed.
