The Mentor Program

By Rancidrode#5643 - FORMER SUBSCRIBER - September 20, 2013, 13:19:09
First of all I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Rod, I'm 19 years old and I've played Dofus since I was 12. I'm from Belgium and my native language is Dutch, never learned how to speak English in school so I picked up a few words here and there from TV and online gaming. Now I fluently speak it as far as I can tell myself. I go by the ingame names of "Rewind" and "Cuteness".

Now that we got that out of the way I'll just jump straight into the action.

I like helping new peeps and occasionally do so ingame. Some examples would be helping people resource hunt for their new sets, doing giveaways ( I'm the only one on my server currently doing this as far as I can tell ) of low level sets by hosting several minigames like hide 'n seek, quizes, etc ... and by answering questions about all kinds of classes, sets, levelling tactics, etc ...

Now I feel I could do even more with the use of this forum, and I feel others could be encouraged to do the same thing, and use a little of their free time to help others get into the game. As we all know Dofus is unique. It's a very entertaining yet difficult game to start with. I hope with this "Mentor Program" we can help those newer people out abit more. I know there's a new player forum, but honnestly as a new player I would rather get my answers ingame rather than waiting for some people to answer on the forums which can take a while. Now how would this all work ? Simple. I'll explain in a few steps below.

1) Everyone who is willing to spent a little free time to help out newbies by answering their questions can put their name here. Example on how to will be put down below.

2) If a new player stumbles upon this thread, they can see and look for a mentor on their server and ask them the questions they need answering. This would ( usually ) be faster than posting on the forums and waiting for a reply.

I'll put up an example of how to put yourself up as a Mentor. This example will also be my real submition as a Mentor, so newer people can ask me questions if they like.

The major problem is the f2p folken find dofus boring because Astrub is so limited, and a 200 leaching a 30 isn't going to help that 30 much until he or she can learn their character, and be willing to grind, then grind some more. Something a lot of players find odious to the extreme.

I think you might mean leeching. wink

Think small, blood-sucking segmented worm, not water-soluble nutrients being sucked away from topsoil by excess irrigation or rainfall. =)

Also, it's great to see so many people interesting in bringing new people up in the DOFUS ways! I wholeheartedly approve!

I have this idea for a long time, just one of the ideas that I have thought to help new players and encourage them to stay.

Mentor Interface
A new interface/system wherein new players can find helpful/available players in-game.

Basically it has 2 function:
1. Register/De-register
---Players who are feeling helpful and have free time to help out new players can click on the register button. Their name will be registered in the mentor list.
---Mentor can then check/tick on the different area of expertise that they can offer to help.
Example areas:
General
Class
Profession
Leveling
Gears
Monster/Dungeon Hunting

---Registered mentor will be included in that list for as long as they are online/in-game.
---Their name will be remove from the list when they go offline, or if they de-register.

2. Look for (Find) available Mentor.
---New players or players with question can click on this interface to look at the list of registered mentor.
---They can click on the registered players name to be able to open up the player's interface and enable them to private message them.
---Mentor's that was selected thru this system gets mentor points. Mentor points are similar to the Community Forum's posting point system, they do not grants any beneficial in-game reward, just the honor of being identified as a helpful person. To diminish abuse and cheating, points will be limited to 1 mentor point per newbie account/IP per day so even if a mentor use this system multiple times to increase his/her mentor points, he will only receive 1 mentor point for every person who choose him regardless of how many times that particular student choose him.

Note: The Mentor's list can be arrange by Level, Class, Expertise or Mentor's point to help newbie decide and find mentors that are best suited to answer their query.

Mentor Warning: Players who register in this interface is expected to be at their best helpful attitude. If a player register in this program then commit undesirable behavior, they will be dealt with extreme prejudice. tongue Also, those who use this system to pester registered mentor should also be wary that they will be punished. This system is to help those who need help find someone who are willing to help, using it wrongly would mean that you are preventing that purpose to be realized.

Optional
Mentor Reward System:
Mentor points can be used as currency to buy some novelty items, achievements... etc

Example:
Mentor Hat: 100 mentor points. Looks like a scholar hat.
Lightbulb Emote: 300 mentor points. A bright lightbulb lights up above the character.
Apprentice Mentor (Title): 100 mentor point.

They are of no material use other than aesthetic and sociological gratification.

First of all, congratulations on learning impeccable English. Perhaps you could teach the devs and mods and zennies a thing or two. B, I've been helping along newcomers for quite some time; more so since the never-ending nerfs and other abominations have been done to my once beloved hobby to make it far less playable. I am online throughout the day and willing to help anyone who has learned to comport themselves with an air of respect and courtesy.

The major problem is the f2p folken find dofus boring because Astrub is so limited, and a 200 leaching a 30 isn't going to help that 30 much until he or she can learn their character, and be willing to grind, then grind some more. Something a lot of players find odious to the extreme.

There is never a busted banjo (no strings attached) to my participation. Don't have to join a guild or alliance (shiver), and once established they can go on their merry way. If you respect the game the game will respect you, something the powers that be cannot begin to fathom, but if you listen and learn you'll do fine.

Ask nicely, don't bug me to get every challenge under the sun, and we can be friends. And call me Mana. I am a retired Marine Master Sergent but I practice my mantras so the grouchiness is kept to a minimum. If you're on Solar drop me a line.
