Devblog 2.65 - Common Spells

By [Ankama]DOFUS - ADMIN - September 06, 2022, 17:00:00
AnkaTracker
Update 2.65 gave us an opportunity to make some changes to common spells, which is something we have been wanting to do for a very, very long time.

Was Changing Them Really Necessary?

For those at the back of the class who have not been paying attention, let's first review what common spells are. As the name suggests, a common spell is one that is common to all classes, which means it can be obtained and used by all the classes in the game. There are different ways to get them depending on the spells in question.

There are currently 15 common spells in the game, and they can be divided into three main categories:

  • Capture spells that are not used in combat: Soul Capture, Mount Taming.
  • Spells related to the mechanics of certain monster families: Necronyx, Bow, Slayspirit Lantern.
  • And finally, spells used in combat in certain situations: Summons Skill and Summons' Freedom,* Leek Pie, Perfidious Boomerang, Moon Hammer, Lightning Strike, Cawwot, Summoning of Arachnee, Summoning of Chaferfu, Release, and Weapon Skill.

* A variant for the "Summons Skill" spell was added in update 2.64. It lets players choose whether summons are controlled by default or not.

In this update, only spells in the 3rd category are being modified.

While fundamental to DOFUS, there were several areas of how these spells currently work that we wanted to improve:

  • Not all common spells were very useful.
  • Certain elemental paths had one or even two common spells, whereas others didn't have any.
  • Although the variation in acquiring them was adequate, there were still some unlocking issues to fix.
  • Apart from Summons Skill and its variant, which are relatively recent, there have not been any new common spells since… the launch of Dofus 2.0 (and the last balancing dates back to Update 2.10 in February 2013).

That's Cool and All but What's the Goal?

We identified several goals for these changes:

  • Increase the usefulness of common spells in PvM and PvP, without making them essential.
  • Have one common spell per element.
  • Have situational spells – that is to say, spells that will be powerful and useful but only in specific situations.
  • Add customization options based on gameplay style.
  • Streamline the acquisition and use of these spells so they align with players' progression.
  • Finally, just like class spells, have common spell levels so that each spell's power keeps up with the character's level.

A Glimpse at What to Expect

You will find all the details of the changes and new features added to common spells in the changelog that will be published on the day the Beta starts. But here's an overview of the various spells:

Could be cool. Just keep them situational and not too powerful.

Woah! This looks great! Any hints on how the new spells will be obtained? wink

"Weapon Clumsiness: Decreases the attacker's weapon damage"
Wha...why?

"BURNT PIE: Inflicts damage in the caster's worst element.
LEEK PIE: Inflicts damage in the caster's best element."

I don't see why this would be helpful unless you can change it during a match. Most of my characters are omni and don't have a weak element. I'd prefer a choice as it is - fire damage. I often use leek pie to weaken and *just* avoid killing. If it changes, I will have to recalculate it for each of my characters.

Oh - and I will miss the Chafer Lancer's damage on a crit, though that is just happenstance anyway I guess. I have noticed that the Lancer is self-controlled by default now. One would hope that changes with the Beta as it may ruin the "Keep Moving" challenge.

Holy shit these changes are great! The new water spell that - crits or gives you crit is insane. This spell can easily shake the meta and builds people do in PvM. Now it isn't a must to get 100% crit on some builds. Perhaps that 50 crit damage 1 AP boar will be better now and snailmate isn't needed all the time if it's a good chunk of crit. Also helps when you are the one using a soul stone while doing crit builds.

Cawwot is super interesting. Now can perhaps proc nightmare dofus easier and get more out of your 1st turn/buff turns by shielding yourself while healing.

Lighting is super interesting, especially with chain lighting.

Summoning of the skeleton is a good change because I think this helps get rid of the gambling people do with it. Wonder if the chaf will have the same stats.

Moon hammer is huge. If you get to keep that +1 range for 6 turns, just wow.

Boomerange + the new release variant is interesting to pull things in.

Leak pie is super cool to do for people that don't run int builds. Still allows you to build around it for specific encounters.

Weapon clumsiness... Can you cast this on enemies? If so huge. But if not hmm I wonder why you'd want to do this.

Summoning whatever spider is nice as well.

Mantiscroc and the variant are really good too if you lack lock or need a bit of dodge.

Overall super interesting changes. Really excited for this update!

@Rigelius Omni builds can put stat points accordingly to make a skill the strongest and weakest.

I love weapon clumsiness, that will be great for healing weapons, and for achieves like Protoz barbaric. This is gonna be a lot of fun and great for consistency!

Since it's not necessarily a flaming hot pie anymore - time for an actual pie animation? smile

Would be cool if the animation changed base on the element that it is using.

EDIT: It shoots a pretty rainbow version now!

I love these changes! Some spells like leek pie, release, summon skill and weapon skill are currently kind of must haves, but it'll be great to have some additional spells in each elemental build.
Although that said, I hope they also take a look at obtaining them. For leek pie, you currently need to either be in a strong alliance, or simply (indirectly) fork over your kamas for alliance players. Similar to everything requiring pebbles, I'd love to see PvP elements becoming fully optional in spell and gear creation.

Are Quagmire/Mound actually in the game? I haven't seen/heard any information about them or where they're obtained from.

As far as I know, they did some changes before the update.
So the list in this devblog is not 100% accurate.

You'll probably have to check the changelog for the update to see, which spells ended up in the game and  which ones were scrapped.

Hey all. Hate to revive this, but I've never seen an official update come out. Is Quagmire/Mound in the game? I've seen nothing in the in-game directories.

Hoping for official word on this somewhere.

I lost all the common spells on my accounts to except one. Is that normal? What’s the problem? Do I have to repeat DJ’s and missions?

Hello,

That is strange. In order to receive assistance on this, I recommend you write a ticket to the Support team so they can investigate more closely and help you retrieve your spells!

Thank you for your understanding.
