Fix the Experience Curve

By Nerd-Tease#5532 - FORMER SUBSCRIBER - April 26, 2016, 02:43:47
So there are some issues with the xp curve outside of what happens at 199 (which could be argued is a feature of the curve)

The curve is very... ragged. The growth in xp needed per level is actually negative in parts of it, and in other parts there are large spikes in the xp curve that make no sense (leave out 199-200 in this discussion if you want, it still shows)

Refit the Numbers to show constant growth please. This can be done without adjusting the max xp or max level.

See spreadsheet here for more details

There are lots of things to consider when it comes to gaining exp... Mobs level, group level, exp modifiers, wisdom gears... Exp needed to next level might spike up at certain levels but those levels opens up to better gears which makes getting exp easier/faster...

IMO, leveling is easy now so exp curve is hardly ever felt.

@Gunner I'm not asking for them to make leveling easier, just to refit the curve to something that makes more sense. If you read what I put there, you'd notice certain levels where the difference in xp needed fluctuates wildly.

Here's something a bit more visual since the data apparently isn't easy for everyone to read.

Graphed it looks mostly normal with a linear scale, however this is due to the linear scale being so inflated by the last 20 levels of the game

When looking at it with a log scale, some of the issues become more noticeable (for those who don't know, if the xp grew steadily exponentially, on this scale it would be a straight line)

Like this there are more easily spotted (visually) problems in the curve around the lower levels, but also a similar but more pronounced issue around lv 180.

I'm not complaining about the amount of xp to hit 200, I don't mind a little xp grind.

It's all just a obsessive/compulsive urge to having a straight "perfect" curve... But does it really matter? Even if the exp table is evenly distributed, it would still require the same amount to reach max level.

I play solo (no leeching), and in my experience leveling to 200, the curve is pretty steady. The higher the level, the longer it takes to gain another level. It gets to the point that I am no longer counting numbers but I can estimate when my next level up will be (with the exception of level 200 which is a big curve, but still can be estimated, right now I can do 1-199 in 2 months, 199-200 in 1 month).

It is more than just that.

Here's an example within 3 levels to show the type of oddities that currently exist in the level curve for no apparent reason.

Lv 35 to 36 needs 100,000 xp
Lv 36 to 37 needs 140,000 xp
Lv 37 to 38 needs 160,000 xp

So after leveling once, I need the same amount as previous + another 40,000, but the next time I need the same amount as previous + 20,000.

Looking at the numbers, it looks ugly. It looks like someone picked random points to be where the next level is without thought to it.

Like I said, gear and mobs level play a factor in the exp table.

When mobs and gears are maximized for level 35, exp gains will be less when you are above that level, thus exp needed are lower.

So Because I get more xp from a higher level mob, I should require less of an increase in xp needed to the next level? Of Course not, I should require increasingly more xp. This is the exactly the problem I have with it.
Higher level fights give better xp, the curve should never decrease in slope as levels increase, and yet it does.

Thing is, if the best gear is for level 35, and the next gear would be for level 60, take into account that the mob level is level 35 and the next level mob would be level 45, you will have less experience on level 35 mobs and harder time fighting level 45 mobs on your level 35 gears.

Yes, it does look ugly and it is also somewhat strange to have in such a level-oriented game. This should be evened out as it should have been a long time ago. Again, it's very strange that something so ingrained is ultimately without a pattern.

Thats not the point he is arguing or trying to make. I understand what you are saying and all of that would remain the same.
The point behind the post is so that it is modified to a steady growth rather then being what seems to be randomly selected numbers. This would really have no impact on how you are leveling/gaining xp, it would just make it so that it doesnt appear to be randomly selected numbers.
